OLB traduction : Alfred Smith enjoyed great notoriety in Bordeaux in the early years of the 3rd Republic. His success at Salons in both Bordeaux and the capital and his participation in the Venice international exhibitions earned him enthusiastic praise from the critics. He was a highly charismatic figure, affable, a talented communicator, with a predilection for dedicating his works. His large-scale cityscapes have better resisted the test of time than his pastoral scenes and woodlands which erstwhile forged his reputation as a Naturalist painter. This painting, dating from 1883, is dedicated to fellow painter Amédée Baudit, in whose studio Smith spent some time, after studying with Pradelles and Chabry. It was most probably begun outdoors then reworked inside and was traded as part of the bartering system he set up early in his career with artists whose esteem or friendship he enjoyed, like Roll, Damoye, Boudin, Cabrit, Mariol or Delpech. Smith already had a 'moonlight scene' by his master Baudit, and Pradelles, whose portrait he had painted, had traded a landscape for a fine sketch of a schoolboy walking through the streets of Talence. View of La Bastide provides us with a glimpse of city life from a perspective rarely ventured by Smith's contemporaries, Mariol and Cabrit. Here, the artist spurns the city's customary landmarks to explore more humble aspects of urban life. His exploration unveils a novel vision of the modern city, with the artist surveying it from a historical point of view, as Léo Drouyn did for more time-honoured districts. A stretch of wasteland, a terrace of 'échoppes', the atmosphere of a working-class neighbourhood with its higgledy-piggledy urban layout provide ample evidence of the quality of the artist's technical control and audacious use of colour. The work prefigures the fruitful approach which earned Smith his first major success at the Bordeaux Salon of 1884, with his View of Quai de la Grave. This painting was acquired by the museum in 1986 and has much in common with the former -a Customs booth, boiler and a barren desert of stones, bleached white by the unrelenting sun, relegating the city's more familiar skyline into the vaporous haze of the horizon.
